Slangenbaai, or snake bay, earns its name from the garden eels that can be found on the sandy plateau before the reef. (Don't worry, there are no sea snakes in the Caribbean.) This site is accessible by boat or shore, and it"s suitable for all levels of divers. To get here by car, take a left off the Weg Naar Bullenbaai and head to the nearby fishing village of Boka St. Michiel. The local restaurants offer fish right off the boats; they’ll be happy to prepare it for you there, or you can throw the fish on ice and take it home for a barbecue. The dive site is located at the southeast end of town. Park on the road by the Wedervoort Apartments and take the steep path down to a narrow stretch of coral rubble beach. The area is generally sheltered from the wind with minimal waves and current present. Snorkelers will enjoy the garden eels and small coral formations found along the sandy plateau. To reach the drop-off, swim straight out from the beach about 100 yards. The reef starts in 30 feet of water and falls fairly steeply beyond 130 feet, populated by healthy colonies of Brain Coral, Plate Coral, and a mixture of Gorgonians. Look for Lobster, Cleaner Shrimp, Christmas Tree Worms, Spotted Morays, and large schools of reef fish. |
